Hello Everyone,
I am writing to you from the VSTE Conference. It stands for Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE). So far it has been a great conference to attend. I won a door prize called Claymation Kit which my students will be using to create cool videos and attained a video games software CD to make video games on class content. Wow!
I hope to do some podcasting while I am here since there are sooo many wonderful presenters on wikis, social networking, blogs, games, websites, search engines, and many more fun technology tools.

Please go to Microtype and go to Keyboarding Skill Building-Lesson A--then click on the next tab past the last pink check mark you have on the bottom. Keep doing each tab in order until you are done with Lesson A. Proceed to Lesson B and do the same thing until you go through every lesson listed.
Please look to your teacher for instructions for a New Hands On Game to help you learn the differences and similarities between an MLA style One-page Report and a Standard Formatting style One-page Report. Get ready to have some fun! Candy included!
Mystery Database: Open the Mystery DB located in the template folder. Open a copy and save immediately. You will receive a handout of some mysteries to solve. Use FIND (magnifiying glass) to solve the mysteries. Please look over the handout before you ask any questions as to how to do this project. Save as MYSTERY DB in your Database folder. (We would prefer if you create a New Folder in your Documents called Databases and then for each new database you create, make a New Folder for it. For example the Mystery DB folder should be inside the Databases folder in your Documents. I will create a video tutorial on how to do this for the next class period. Just carry on the best you can for now until I can give you the video.) PLEASE solve the mysteries. Use the Mystery worksheets to find and solve the mystery. Read the handout very carefully. Please open a new Appleworks word processing document and put your answers there. Save it as Answers to Mystery DB in your Database folder.
Now, open your database that has the information about your classmates. I is called one of the following: Student DB, Class DB, Class P(your period number) DB, or something you chose to call it. Anyway, it is the one where each student moved to each computer and entered data. Open that now and follow these instructions : *Make sure every student has his or her information on your database.
*Please add a Header. See video below for instructions on what to include in the Header and how to do it.

*Save As -- PERIOD (put your period number here) CLASS DB. Make sure you save it into a folder called PERIOD ___ CLASS DB.
*Thats all we will do for now.

Open your book to page 161. Read silently from page 161-162. Observe page 162 to see how your project should look today. The header, source and citations should all be the same as page 162. Now do Project 15. You will open WP015 from the Starting Points > Templates tab in Appleworks just like you did last class period. (see movie for details) Save as STWP015.
Now, please take the handout of a Venn Diagram. We will now compare an MLA style one-page report (pg. 145) and a standard formatting style one-page report (pg. 150). Take your handout, gather up in groups of two, open your books to page 145 and 150 (your have two in the group so each one open to one or the other page), and write down the similarites in the center of your Venn Diagram and the differences in the appropriate spaces. Your teacher can help guide you through this.

Please read directions below before beginning today's warmup. After reading the information below, complete Project 9 on page 152. Listen to audioblog at the end of the directions for instructions on how to do Project 9. Open your Glencoe Computer Applications and Keyboarding Book to page 150. Notice the formatting in the one-page report shown on the page. This is another acceptable format for reports. We already learned how to do MLA style one-page reports. Now we will learn a standard business format. We will compare the two styles a little later this week but for now we will type and format a one-page report in standard business format one-page report and practice using find and replace.

Standard Business Format - See formatting tips on page 151. See example on page 150.
Find and Replace - allows you to replace a word or group with a different word or group of words. If you are typing a report and use one word over and over, you can abbreviate it while you type, then go back and "find and replace" it with the full word later.

Okay, now that you understand what we are learning today, lets get started. Open
Appleworks 6, open Starting Points, Templates, and find WP009. Double click it, click on Open a copy, go to File, Save, and save it in your Word Processing folder in your
Documents as STWP009. Now, follow the instructions given on page 152. To see what
STWP009 should look like when it is done, Click Here.Here is the audio instruction for today's one-page report lesson.

3. Next, we will learn all about Reports. Just what you wanted to do today. Right? I know you are anxious to get started, so here we go. While learning the process of creating reports, it is necessary to know the words we will use to describe what we need you to do. On page 144 (which is section 8) of the textbook there is a list of Words to Know. Today you need to read pages 150 and 151 and find the meaning to the following words:

Title,
Subtitle,
Byline,
Body, and
Find and Replace.

Now here is a step-by-step procedure for how to type the definitions of the words numbered above:

Open a new document in Appleworks and create two columns. I personally like to open a Drawing document and use text tool to create two text fields as columns. Then you can move them around by clicking on the arrow tool and sliding the text box around. FEEL FREE to do this any way you like.
On the left side type the word and on the right side type the meaning.
At the bottom of the page not in columns, type the Formatting Tips that are listed on page 151. If you are using a Drawing doc, you can create any shape you like then put a text field inside it to type the tips.
You will save this document as Section 8 Notes in your Documents.

4. Great job. And now we will finish the day's objectives by finishing the Database assignment given on Day 41. Below is a copy of the directions for that assigment. understand that we want you to read the directions at the same time as you listen to the audio instructions. Please Type project 7 - one page report, MLA style. To start off, open Appleworks 6 and make sure you have the starting points open. To check, go to file, show Starting Points. Then click on the tab at the bottom of Starting Points box called Templates. Find WP007. Double click on it, click Open a Copy and save it right away as STWP007 in your Documents folder. Follow instructions given in the book on page 148. Do this project on your own. If you do not finish, you must complete this on your own. This report will be graded next class period. In practice 1, you will switch between the database views.

Choose Browse from the Layout menu. To highlight a record, click in the record's area and the whole record will highlight.
Choose Layout from the Layout menu
Choose Find from the Layout menu.
Choose List from the Layout menu. To highlight, click on the small square to the left of the record you wish to highlight.

In practice 2, you will add and delete a record.

Choose List from the Layout menu. Fill in one record with your own information. To add a record, choose New Record from the Edit menu.
To delete a record, highlight a record to be deleted or place the cursor in any field in the record to be deleted and choose Delete Record from the Edit menu. Please add a record, put your information in it again, then delete the record.

In practice 3, you will slit a database screen.

To view two different parts of a very large database at the same time, we will split the screen. Sections of a split screen we call panes. To split the screen, click and hold your mouse pointer above and a little to the left the vertical scroll bar. Click and hold and drag the mouse down about halfway on your screen. Now you can scroll down to two different places in your database.

Please do the sorts and searches listed below in bullets on your Weather Database. Save each sort and search with a name that I will recognize... i.e. HighTemp>80. WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW

Please remember to click on OPTIONS, show all records before starting a new search or sort. Otherwise you won't have all the records up to do a search or sort.

To get started, please copy and paste the bulleted items below to a Microsoft Word document. That is the blue W in in your Dock. Save it as Answers to Weather DB in a new folder in your Documents called Weather DB. To create a new folder, click on Documents in your Finder, then click on File, New, New Folder and rename it when it first shows up as Untitled. You will save all your items for this exercise in this folder.

Do not watch video above called Creating Certificates until you complete steps #1,2, and 3 in this lesson. First, we will begin with Microtype as warmups. That can be found by logging out and then logging in to Microtype. The password to get in Microtype is type. After that, find your name and type in your usual Password. Begin by taking the speed test. Just follow the directions on the screen. After that click on the Keyboarding Skill Builder and begin with lesson A. You will do all of lesson A then begin lesson B, etc.
Do your Weather DB. Click on the link to the right of this message on the sidebar that says Weather Data for your weather data.
ClICK HERE to retake the Desktop Publishing test. The pictures are now correct. Please review the names of all the drawing palettes on Appleworks before you begin. You can do this by opening an Appleworks Drawing document then letting your mouse rollover each option in your toolbox. The name of the palettes and buttons will come up if you leave your mouse on the paletter or button. Then begin the test.
Now listen and watch the video on this page called Creating a Certificate. Follow directions and begin your lesson by going to page 288 and making a certificate exactly like the one in the book. After you are done, Click Here for directions to create another Certificate.
Today we will begin a new unit on Databases. We will begin by filling out a handout on Databases. Please get out a pencil and follow along. After we are done you will be working with your weather database as well as creating new databases. Today we will begin with Microtype as warmups. That can be found by logging out and then logging in to Microtype. The password to get in Microtype is type. After that, find your name and type in your usual Password. Begin by taking the speed test. Just follow the directions on the screen. After that click on the Keyboarding Skill Builder and begin with lesson A. You will do this for the first 10 minutes of class.
Do your Weather DB now. The database is on the right side of this screen in the sidebar. Save and close when done.
Now we will take a test on Desktop Publishing. The test will be in two parts. One part will be a multiple choice test on the computer. The other part will be to create a flyer following my handout's instructions. YOU MUST do everything exactly as the directions ask you to do. I will give you the handout after finishing the first part. Raise your hand when you are done. Now let's begin with the multiple choice test. Please Click Here to take your test.
When you are done with both parts of your test, please finish any work that is incomplete. See the link on the sidebar that says " Classwork" for a full list of the work due.

Today we will begin a new project. Pretend you just bought a restaurant. We will create a restaurant menu for your new restaurant. Where have you seen a menu you think is good looking? Lets make a menu using Print Shop Deluxe . Here we go....

Open Print Shop Deluxe Companion
Click on Postcard>Wide>Blank>No Layout. BE SURE to click on Back of Postcard to begin. This is located on the bottom left hand side of the Print Shop Screen.
Save as Postcard in your Documents.
Go to Safari and type Google.com in the address bar.
Type the country or city and country you want to use in the search window
Click on IMAGES.
Drag and drop two images of choice to a new Appleworks Drawing Document which you will save as "Postcard Pictures"
Now copy and paste each picture from the Appleworks Drawing Document into the Print Shop Deluxe Companion Postcard you are creating.
You must add the following to complete the back of the postcard:

Two pictures which you cut and pasted into your postcard
One sentence about each picture.Type it like your telling a friend about the picture..for ex. "Tomorrow we will be visiting the Great Wall of China"
Now Go to 1000countries.com
Now scroll down to the bottom of the page. Find your country and click on it.
Scroll down till you find LOCATION. Type the location exactly as you see it on the webpage but make it sound like you are telling a friend about where you are. ie. "Brazil is in Eastern South America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean."
Now write two more sentences. One sentence should tell the climate and the other sentence should tell the Area Comparative. Both can be found here.

Add the following to the FRONT of the Postcard:

Put one text block in the upper left hand corner and type your return address there using regular text, not script font, Size Small
Put one text block in the lower right hand corner and type your friend's name and address in a MEDIUM text. Again, you do not have to use script.
Put a text block in the lower left hand corner and type a minimum of five sentences in script font size Extra Small such as Signature. Tell your friend what a good time your having, when you are coming home, what else you may do while you are there etc.
Add a stamp and a postcript . I will instruct you on how to do this but if you feel adventurous and want to do this by yourself follow these instructions:

Using your Tool Box, click in the upper right hand box. There you will find a Square Graphic. Please click on that now.
Now Double Click the box.
Click on Change Libraries
Click on the little arrow for the drop down box and click on Desktop--Macintosh HD--Applications -Mac OS 9--Print Shop Deluxe--Libraries-- and scroll down until you see PSDC Stamps. Click ok. Pick a stamp and put it in the upper right hand corner.
NOw Add another Square Graphic. Place it partially over the stamp.
Double click the grey square graphic and change libraries just as you did above but this time pick PSDC Postmarks. Pick a postmark and place it over or near the stamp. A postmark is what the Post Office stamps over your stamp to prove it was sent through them.
If you wish to slightly rotate your postmark to look more realistic. select your postmark, click on Option in the menu bar, click on Rotate, and change the skew...

SAVE AS POSTCARD in your Documents!

Open a new Word Processing document. Please type The Veteran's Day paper that is on your stand. We will be keying this as your first warmup. Save it as Veteran's Day. To place clip art, please go to Google.com and click on Images. Then enter "Veterans Day" and click search. Now be sure your tool box is open on your Word Processing Document and make sure your arrow pointer is clicked on. Then drag an image you like from the Google.com to your document. (you have to be able to see both google and your document before attempting to drap the image)If you had the arrow pointer on, the image will have handles around it. You can move the image to upper right hand corner of the document. Then click Options > Text Wrap> Regular (or Irregular) > OK. The text should wrap around your image. Save and close your work.

I am also experimenting with adding videos to your class page. This is a video of drive we took on Skyline Drive yesterday. You do not have to watch it since it is an experiment. Please start "Warmup I" today on your November files. I will call time when ten minutes is up.

Today we will continue to work on Letterhead One (replicate the letterhead on page 111 in the 7th Grade Book in an Appleworks Draw program. Save it as Letterhead One) and Letterhead Two (create a letterhead for a company you may own or work for one day.. Save it as Letterhead Two) Instructions for both of these projects is on Day 22.

We will also do our business cards today. The instructions we will follow are on Day 24. I will guide you through this exercise.

Choose greeting card/side fold. Choose

Choose a graphic or change library. Work through row graphics and column graphics.

Choose your own graphics for card. Read through the rest of choices from menu.
Design your own card. Do not print.

5. Letterhead-A business letter represents a company, not an individual, and
is therefore prepared on official company stationery. Include in letterhead:

COMPANY ADDRESS,
PHONE #,
FAX #,
EMAIL ADDRESS,
COMPANY'S LOGO.

6. Do the letterhead "Software Connections". Duplicate the letterhead using drawing tools. No clip art. Save as "letterhead one". Save to printer 1-1 for grade. Be sure name is on paper.

7. Design a letterhead for a company you may own or work for one day. Save
as "letterhead two". Should contain same info. as in "letterhead
one". May use graphics from Print Shop.

than 2 pieces of clip art allowed in this flyer. The clip art must deal with
the the topic of the flyer. Print 1 to 1. Make sure your name and period number
are on the flyer.

5. Recreate the Personal Stationary on Page 276. Directions are on Page 278.
Edit with spell check.

6. Recreate the Personal Stationary on Page 279.

7. Another new assignment for today is Project 68--Page 280. You will design
your own personal stationary. You may print stationary if you wish for yourself.
Printing is not mandatory.

4.Your new assignment for today is Project 64 -- page 268--TV project. Please open your book to Pages 268-269. Look at the the final product we are going to create.

I will show how to make check marks by using the regular polygon tool from the tool bar

I will walk you through drawing the TV. We will be using the Object Info box found under Options>Object Size. Open the Object Size box now.

Go to Format > Rulers > Show Rulers. Remember students that V=vertical and H=horizontal. Up and down is Vertical and left to right is Horizontal.

For the TV choose the rounded rectangle--Start at 1" V/1" H draw to 5" V/7" H.( 6"x4") For the inside of the TV use the rounded rectangle tool-- start at 1 1/2 H draw to 4 1/2"V/ 6 1/2" H (5"x3")

Draw remainder of flyer by yourself.

6. Open up Appleworks Word Processing. Add the tools by clicking on Windows-Show tools. Go to File-library-Business images and put a pencil in the document. Make sure the arrow is highlighted before adding a picture, otherwise the picture will be treated as text. Click on the Pencil and then click on the Arrange menu and choose free rotate.

7. Check to see if students can make their pencil rotate.

8. Draw a picture and try to use all the tools.

9. Draw your dream home layout with your computer, TV etc.

PARTS OF A BUSINESS LETTER AND
* Parts of a Personal Business Letter*

1. BLOCK STYLE LETTER FORMAT - All parts of the letter begin at the left margin or page guide.

2. LETTERHEAD - is printed stationery paper for business letters. It may include the name of the business, address, phone number, slogan, and/or graphic.

*3. RETURN ADDRESS - is the writer's address (usually 2 lines).

*4. DATELINE - is the current date spelled out.

*5. INSIDE ADDRESS - receiver's name and address. (Their title - Mr., Mrs., & Ms., Street Address, City, State, and Zip Code).

*6. SALUTATION - is the greeting (Dear Mr. Smith).

*7. BODY - Message of the letter (SS the paragraphs with wrap around and DS in between the paragraphs).

*8. COMPLIMENTARY CLOSE - Farewell (Ex. Sincerely yours,).

*9. SIGNATURE - Handwritten signature of the person who composed the letter (black ink).

*10. TYPED NAME - Writer's name (typed).

*11. JOB TITLE - Writer's title with the company (optional on a personal business letter. Ex. Debate Club President).

12. REFERENCE INITIALS - Typist's initials keyed in lowercase with no punctuation marks.

13. "ENCLOSURE" - An optional notation (It informs the receiver of additional information in the letter such as tickets, check, or brochure).

14. POSTSCRIPT - An optional message that is often used as an attention-getter or reminder. Typed in paragraph form. (P.S.)
